Maysaloun Faraj
Maysaloun Faraj is a London-based Iraqi painter, ceramist, and sculptor. She holds a BSc in Architecture and spent her early years between Los Angeles, Washington, and New York before moving to Baghdad in the late 1960s and settling in London in 1982. She has completed residencies at Cité International des Arts, Paris (2015, 2017, 2018).
With an aesthetic informed by architectural discipline, her practice brings together Eastern and Western influences, drawing on spirituality, geometry, and vibrant colour to explore themes of harmony, memories of homeland, and the transience of human existence.
Faraj has been a leading figure in the Iraqi modern art scene. She curated the first major international touring exhibition of Iraqi art, Strokes of Genius: Contemporary Iraqi Art(2000–03), and is editor of the seminal publication (Saqi Books, 2001). She co-founded Aya Gallery (2002–10) to promote art from the Arab world and served as a judge for the inaugural Arab Art and Culture Award in the UK (2008).
Her work is held in collections including the British Museum, Mathaf (Doha), National Museum for Women in the Arts (Washington), Rotterdam Wereld Museum, Jordan National Museum (Amman), Barjeel Art Foundation (UAE), Al-Mansouria Foundation (Paris), Aga Khan Foundation (Canada), and distinguished private collections internationally.
